The creation of the Maaden National Agency in Mauritania fulfills an election commitment made by His Excellency the President of the Republic, Mr. Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, who pledged, in his 2019 presidential platform “Taahoudati,” to establish mechanisms enabling the artisanal and semi-industrial mining sector to optimally contribute to the country’s economic and social development.
Thus, the Agency was created with legal personality and financial autonomy to operate as a public industrial and commercial institution, headquartered in Nouakchott and under the technical supervision of the Ministry of Mines and Industry.
The decision to create it was taken by the Council of Ministers on March 5, 2020, followed by Decree No. 065-2020 dated May 28, 2020, establishing the rules for its organization and operation.
Since its establishment, Maaden Mauritania has been the official framework responsible for leading the State’s efforts in terms of organization and supervision of the artisanal and semi-industrial mining sector, with a view to transparency, sustainability and improvement of economic profitability.
