Maaden Mauritania… Global strategy and clear objectives to organize and modernize the artisanal and semi-industrial mining sector

The Maaden National Agency in Mauritania operates according to an ambitious strategic vision and specific objectives, inspired by the high-level guidelines of His Excellency the President of the Republic, Mr. Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani. The objective is to transform the artisanal and semi-industrial mining sector into a powerful lever for economic and social development, while ensuring the highest standards of safety and environmental protection.

The Agency has developed its 2024-2029 Multi-Year Strategic Plan, a truly practical and integrated roadmap, structured around seven strategic areas and thirty specific objectives aimed at:

Strengthening geological knowledge: through field studies and advanced exploration to improve the accuracy of data relating to mineral reserves.
Organizing the sector and supervising stakeholders: by establishing a comprehensive legal and regulatory framework for activities and by establishing official registration and licensing mechanisms, while ensuring the peaceful coexistence of artisanal and semi-industrial mining.
Develop infrastructure and services: including the creation and modernization of processing centers, the improvement of roads leading to sites, and the provision of water, electricity, and communications services.
Modernize production methods: by encouraging the adoption of modern, environmentally friendly technologies and introducing alternatives to mercury processing, in accordance with the Minamata Convention.
Launch pilot investment projects: including small mines with direct participation from the Agency, the development of partnerships with national and international investors, and the feasibility study of a national gold refinery.
Strengthen social impact: by financing development projects and basic services for local communities, and by supporting vocational training centers to prepare a skilled workforce for the mining sector.
Ensure resource sustainability and environmental protection: through the creation of an environmental rehabilitation fund and the implementation of post-mining site rehabilitation programs.

This plan is being implemented according to a precise timetable and in partnership with the public and private sectors, international organizations, and local communities. This comprehensive approach ensures the organization of the sector, improving its productivity and attractiveness for investment, while protecting the environment and safeguarding the interests of future generations.

Thanks to this rigorous planning and a constant presence on the ground, Maaden Mauritania is consolidating its position as a key institution in the national economy, a key driver in transforming mineral resources into development opportunities for the benefit of the state, investors, and local communities.
